Of course when we walked in Mrs. Stein had the "pumps your blood" song playing. :) We got an acorn stamp for our homework. Next, we took some notes about the heart to prepare ourselves for the quiz tomorrow. We are responsible for knowing the different parts and their function. Also be familar with the diagram of the heart, and the path blood takes. At the end of class Mrs.Stein was there to answer any questions while we worked on our homework. Tomorrow we will be disecting sheep hearts! Don't forget to study for the quiz! :)

Welcome Back!

Monday, April 4th Schedule: 1.Talk about grades, science contest, seats, labgroups, and blog. 2.Discuss new unit. -What do you already know? 3.Begin homework. Homework: 1.Read 30.3 with flow map. 2. Visit Mrs. Stein for homework pass by tuesday. 3. Extra credit: science contest. Basically today in class we got back into the regular routine after break. We got our new packets and calanders. In this unit we will be learning about digestion and excreation. Mrs. Stein also told us we would be disecting things in the near future, which i personally was not so thrilled about. She also passed out our grade reports and discussed the extra credit opportunity. Durring the last ten minutes of class we got to start our flow maps. The next scribe will be... Gabby!

DNA activity - friday 11/12/10

On friday in class we did a DNA activity. First Mrs. Stein explained our task and then assigned us new lab groups. She told us that we were going to build a model of DNA and show how replications occurs. First we answered some questions and then started our first activity. A diffferent colored tube represented a different kind of nucleotide. Yellow - Guanine, Orange-Adenine, Green -Thymine, and Blue-Cytosine. A white tube stood for phosphate, a white rod stood for hydrogen bond, and a lack pentagon stood for deoxyribose. We assembeled these together to make a DNA model. Mrs. Stein then came around, and if it was correct she initialed our packet. We then moved on to the second activity which was to show how DNA replicates. The DNA untwists and "unzips" into two halfs between the base pairs. Then new nuceotides are added and there are two identical DNA strands. We then asnwered some more questions and before we knew it, the bell rang and class was over.

Plasmolyzed Cell Lab!

Agenda:

5. Plasmolyzed lab (UP 36-37)

Homework:
1. Finish Plasmolysis lab (UP 36-37)
2. Prelab for enzyme lab:
a. Use section 2.4 in textbook for extra help
b. Lab on UP 24-30


When we first got to class we took the quiz. After that we got our stamp for the diffusion lab. Next, as a class we discussed the diffusion lab and answered any questions we had. Mrs. Stein then explained how osmosis in cells works. She explained that a cell might have 99% water and 1% salt in it, while its in a puddle of 6% salt and 94% water. If this happened then the cell would get rid of all the water in it because it moves from high concentration to lower concentration. When this happens, the cell membrane gets smaller and squeezes all the chloroplast into the middle of the cell. Then we witnessed this for ourselves by doing the Normal and Plasmolyzed Cell lab. We ended the class by working on the Analysis questions. If you dont understand this read page 211 in the textbook.
